More than 44 years after he was wounded in Vietnam, a Minnesota Marine veteran has received his Purple Heart, KARE-TV reported.

Mike Kirkpatrick was honored with the prestigious medal Saturday in Bloomington. U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar pinned the medal on Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick, who assisted fellow Marines after he was hurt in the summer of 1968, said he was just doing his duty. "We took care of each other," he said.

A day before Veterans Day, Kirkpatrick said at the event that isn't a hero, and the real ones are those who are buried in American cemeteries who "sacrificed it all" for their country.
