Five members of a family – three of them children – are dead in an apparent murder-suicide at a home on the shores of Lake Minnetonka.

Police searched a house on Channel Drive, Greenwood, Thursday afternoon, FOX 9 reports, and discovered the bodies of a married couple and their three children.

"Officers responding to a welfare check in the city of Greenwood, found all five members of the family deceased from an apparent murder suicide," South Lake Minnetonka Police said on its Facebook page.

Interim Police Chief Mike Siitari referred to it as an "unspeakable tragedy" as he updated reporters on Thursday afternoon, as broadcast by KARE 11.

"I've no words to describe it. I have been a cop for 32 years and to see an event like this, it's a tragedy," he said.

Authorities were notifying next of kin on Thursday and did not publicly identify the family.

Allnurses.com announced in a Facebook post that its founder, Brian Short, was among those who died. Short, a nurse who had formerly worked at Hennepin County Medical Center, created Allnurses in 1997. The website calls itself the largest online nursing community in the world.

Siitari said concerns were raised after the family was not seen or heard from for days, and that the children had not turned up for school, according to KSTP.

According to the Star Tribune, the bodies were found in different parts of the home, which is on Saint Albans Bay.

Siitari said it is a "complex crime scene" and that it could take Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and the The Hennepin County Medical Examiner several days before its investigation is complete.

Greenwood Mayor Debra Kind told the Associated Press she didn't know the family, but said it was "very upsetting news."

"I hope that people who have suicidal thoughts get help," she added, saying this was a "tragedy that is not necessary."
