5 things to do in the Twin Cities this weekend 10/14-16

Darkness Day, Phantogram, and more!

Long-time Phantogram fans have watched the duo evolve from an Upstate New York bedroom project of two longtime friends into a gothic, glammy, festival-dominating superpower. While the group still shows some signs of the Portishead-indebted trip-hop that garnered their initial acclaim, Phantogram's new album Three has huge, radio-ready beats and the kind of drama-charged vocals that should launch them into the arena circuit come GRAMMY-time. Catch them at First Ave while you've still got the chance.

Surly's Darkness Day

Ancient legends foretold the coming of a beer so rich and unctuous that its inky blackness would allow no light to escape. Containing the essence of a single tear from each of the seven princes of hell, the viscous brew is said to dominate the hearts of men so utterly that cursed souls would camp overnight and line up for miles for single bottle. When the Darkness cometh, none are safe.

Sorry, don't know what came over us there. Surly Brewing's Darkness Day is a yearly launch party for the maverick brewery's deliciously boozy Darkness Russian imperial stout, a beer that liquor stores frequently sell out in a single day. In addition to Darkness 2016, Surly will be tapping limited-run beers, hosting an army of food trucks, and some metal bands.

She Rock She Rock 10 Year Anniversary Concert

Incredible rock 'n' roll talent from female-identifying musicians flourishes locally in no small part thanks to organizations like She Rock She Rock. The local nonprofit began in 2007 with Girls' Rock 'n' Roll Retreat, a summer day camp for aspiring musicians from 8 to 16. It has grown in the ensuing years to offer after-school programs, comprehensive audio engineering training, and so much more. Their 10 Year Anniversary show features sets from Bad Bad Hats, former She-Rockers Tony Peachka, and more, plus a silent auction and other giveaways with proceeds benefiting the organizations' continued works.

Schell's Oktoberfest

Technically, this isn't in the Twin Cities, but there's nothing more Minnesotan than packing up the car and heading out of town to get way into autumn, right? Schell's Brewery has centuries worth of experience with craft brewing in the German tradition, and their Oktoberfest celebration is a wholesome, family-friendly celebration of that culture, lederhosen encouraged. Picturesque New Ulm is a little over an hour southwest of the city, and the leaves are said to be seriously lit this time of year, y'all.

Kaleo and Bishop Briggs

Like their countrymen in Of Monsters and Men, Icelandic indie-rockers Kaleo paint with the colors of American folk music on canvas all their own, rendering familiar sounds in an unfamiliar context. Supporting them is Sarah McLaughlin (no, not that other one), aka Bishop Briggs, the U.K. firecracker responsible for the fist-pumping summer anthem "River." Briggs has yet to release a proper debut record, but if her recent Late Night appearance is anything to go on, the singer's mix of trap beats, haunting vocals and prowling stage presence just might steal the show.
