A 5-year-old boy apparently drowned after being found unresponsive in a Woodbury lake over the weekend.
Bystanders who were at the park formed a human chain to help look for the boy in the lake, and within minutes they found him underwater about 25-30 feet from the shore, police said Saturday. The Pioneer Press has more details on the search efforts in this story.
The boy was taken to the hospital, where he later died, police said on Sunday. It's not clear how long the boy was underwater. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner will do an autopsy.
A GoFundMe Page has been set up to help the boy's family pay for funeral expenses. In less than a day, the page has raised nearly $5,000 of the $8,000 goal.
According to the City of Woodbury's website, there's no lifeguard at the park where the boy was found.
There have been at least eight non-boating related drownings in Minnesota this year. Earlier this summer, officials reminded people how to stay safe while swimming, including only swimming where there's a lifeguard on duty, and wearing a life jacket.
