A break-in at a southeastern Minnesota gun shop just before Labor Day weekend has now led to a $5,000 reward.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is offering the money for information that leads to the recovery of the stolen weapons – or to the conviction of the thieves.

The owner of Millville Gun & Rod Shop told authorities he lost as many as 80 guns in the early morning burglary on Friday September 2.

ATF says it has recovered some of the stolen guns while working with the Wabasha County sheriff's office and with authorities in Winona County. They say their priority is recovering the other guns before they wind up in the hands of violent criminals.

Tips about the guns or thieves can be made by phone at 1-800-ATF GUNS (283-4867) or online through Crime Stoppers of Minnesota or reportit.com.

The burglary

Owner Keith Shones shared his surveillance footage from the burglary with KTTC  and ABC 6.

It shows three masked burglars kicking down the door at 4:41 a.m., KTTC says. One of the thieves takes boxes of ammunition while another uses an elbow to break the glass of a display case and steal firearms.

Shones told the station investigators took samples of the blood left behind at the glass case. He said the burglary took just over a minute and estimated the stolen items were worth about $40,000.

Under Minnesota law theft of a gun is punishable with up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $100,000.
