5K and 'Create Joy' events scheduled in honor of Jacob Wetterling

In the wake of Minnesota's biggest mystery being solved, community groups are planning events to honor and remember Jacob Wetterling.

"Running HOME for Jacob" – a 5K run planned by the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center (JWRC) – will be held Oct. 22, exactly 27 years after he was abducted from a rural road in his hometown of St. Joseph.

HOME stands for "Hope for Our Missing and Exploited." The goal of the event is to "raise awareness to the issues of safety, prevention and a unified purpose to create a world where kids can grow up safe."

"Oct. 22 is a day that holds our pain when we think about Jacob. We would like this day to become a day of community, hope and prevention," the event description reads.

There will also be a 1-mile kids race for children run in, as well as "many activities for children and families to participate in."

The race is at Lake Phalen in St. Paul. You can register for it online here or sign up to volunteer at the event here.

Flashmob for Jacob

The race isn't the only event planned to remember Jacob.

Details are in the works for an event to create joy, celebrate kindness and spread love in honor of Jacob.

Organizers are hoping to host the event in the Paynesville-St. Joseph area on Oct. 1, but they're still looking for volunteers to help with music, fundraising, food shelf donations, a flashmob and clean up.

"Create Joy" is one of the things Jacob's mother, Patty Wetterling, said people could do to show their support for her family and bring her comfort following the discovery of Jacob's remains last week.

If you are unable to attend the run or the #CreateJoy event yet still want to help, there's a list on the JWRC website full of suggestions with ways to volunteer your time, money, or services. You can also purchase a children's book or sponsor a presentation on safety.

Jacob's parents and the rest of the world finally got answers to the 11-year-old's disappearance Tuesday when Danny Heinrich, through a plea dealadmitted he kidnapped, assaulted and killed Jacob on Oct. 22, 1989.
