Why wait for Punxsutawney Phil to crawl out of his hole on Friday when you already have a good idea of what's going to happen?

According to AccuWeather, Phil is probably going to see his shadow on Groundhog Day (Friday), meaning the United States can buckle in for another six weeks of winter.

As Minnesotans, we already know we're going to get slammed with bitter cold and snow for at least six more weeks, so what Phil does is virtually meaningless.

AccuWeather's long-range forecasters are suggesting Minnesota could get hit by "a blast of arctic air" in February along with the possibility of "a few heavy snow events."

Again, it's not a bold call to predict cold and snow in Minnesota in February, but the second month of the year is typically one of the duller winter months for Minnesota. According to the NOAA Data Center, February ranks fourth for average snowfall, trailing January, December and March.

If Phil doesn't see his shadow, spring will supposedly come early.

In the short term, the National Weather Service (NWS) is watching for a quick 1-2 inches of snow in parts of Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, Friday into Saturday, and another chance of snow on Monday.

Super Bowl Sunday should be mostly dry and cold, with a high temperature of about 8 degrees, the NWS says.
