Of the three children who survived the crash into a St. Louis Park pond last month, 6-year-old Zarihana Rennie had perhaps the toughest road to recovery.

Her sister 1-year-old Aliyana Rennie, and 5-year-old Amani Coleman-Guerrido, have shown more signs of improvement since the Nov. 21 crash in which two other children died. Zarihana has remained in critical condition.

But the 6-year-old is improving now, too, to the point that it was expected Monday that a breathing tube would be removed, WCCO reports. The girl's mother Shaniece Thompson told WCCO that her daughter is opening her eyes and responding to questions by nodding her head.

“It was a relief. I didn’t know if she’d ever open her eyes again,” Thompson told WCCO. The girl still faces struggles; she has a blood clot and is on a dialysis machine to aid kidney function, WCCO reports.

Zarihana was in the car driven by Marion Guerrido that plunged off a highway ramp into a retention pond at Highway 7 and Highway 100. Guerrido is the mother of three of the five children. One of the children was the child of Guerrido and her boyfriend Julius Rennie, 1-year-old Aliyana.

Two of the kids were the children of Thompson and Rennie: Zarihana and 5-year-old Zenavia Rennie, who died in the crash and was laid to rest over the weekend, as was Guerrido’s 7-year-old son, Alarious Coleman-Guerrido.
