$62,000 raised for former Mankato football player in coma

Friends and family in Mankato came together Thursday for a fundraiser that raised $62,000 for the former Minnesota State University football player left in coma after an altercation in downtown Mankato earlier this month, FOX 9 reports.

Isaac Kolstad remains on life support following the incident, which led to the arrest of former Gophers quarterback Philip Nelson and Trevor Shelley, 21, St. Peter.

Both Nelson and Shelley face charges of first- and third-degree assault.

Kolstad remains in critical condition, although he is showing signs of improvement, his family has said.

The medically induced coma makes it difficult to assess Isaac's brain function, a family representative wrote in post to CaringBridge, in which he thanked people who attended the fundraiser. "We will not be able to fully understand how much or what kind of brain damage Isaac sustained until he is able to tolerate being off sedation medications and his brain injuries have healed," the post says.

Kolstad has undergone multiple surgeries. In one of those procedures, a portion of Kolstad's brain was removed.

All of the money raised at Thursday's event and an online fundraiser will go to help pay for the family's medical expenses. Kolstad has a wife, a daughter and his wife is pregnant.

The fundraiser, held at Kolstad's employer Fastenal in Mankato, drew 2,000 to 3,000 people, a family representative told the Star Tribune.

Organizers set up a meal, a silent auction, activities and sold T-shirts with the hashtag #22strong, a reference to Kolstad’s jersey number.

"They need all the support they can get," said Kolstad's former teammate Chris Schaudt to KEYC. "Support from community and family and friends from states and countries all over [is] coming in, it's really a beautiful thing."

While Kolstad remains hospitalized, the investigation into the incident continues.

The Mankato Free Press reports investigators are attempting to obtain surveillance videos from the bars to determine if Nelson, 20, and his 19-year-old girlfirend, Malorie Veroeven, had been served.

If either were served at one of the bars, the newspaper says that bar could face civil litigation.
