The 5 a.m. crash on westbound I-494, just west of France Avenue, closed westbound traffic through mid-morning. In addition to the death of the cab driver, at least one other person was injured, Fox 9 reports.

The westbound lanes of I-494 were closed for several hours from Penn Avenue to France Avenue, KARE reported.

Near-gridlock resulted, the Star Tribune reported. People were advised to avoid the area at all costs, a highway patrol spokesman told the newspaper. Traffic was at a standstill three hours after the crash on parts of Cedar Avenue and northbound 35W as motorists tried to avoid the closure.

Traffic was heavy along Minnesota 62, an alternative route to I-494, the Pioneer Press reports. Traffic was slow on I-494 east and along I-35W south.
