Six companies based in the Twin Cities and one in Duluth made Inc. magazine's 2012 list of America's 500 Fastest-Growing Private Companies, the Business Journal writes. A company in Plymouth was the highest ranking Minnesota company -- cracking the top 75. Last year, eight Minnesota firms were featured on the list.

GarbageMan, A Green Company, from Plymouth, was the highest ranking Minnesota company -- cracking the top 75.

Fortune Magazine's top 50 list includes 3M, Target, St. Jude Medical and General Mills. Maplewood-based 3M was the highest ranking Minnesota company in the 18th spot for most-admired companies. Best Buy did not make the list this year after being named the 36th most-admired company last year.

2 Minnesota-based companies among nation's leaders in mass layoffs

Layoffs at Best Buy Co. Inc. and Supervalu Inc. landed both Minnesota-based companies on a list highlighting the biggest corporate layoffs during the first half of 2012. Business Insider compiled a list of the Top 16 biggest mass layoffs of 2012, which ranked Best Buy at No. 7 with 2,800 job cuts and Supervalu at No. 8 with 2,500 layoffs.
