A 7-year-old Milaca girl riding her bicycle was struck and killed by a vehicle in Mille Lacs County Tuesday night, according to a State Patrol accident report.

Troopers say the vehicle was westbound on County Road 8, about one-quarter mile east of County Road 5, when it hit the girl, who was also traveling westbound on the road. The accident scene, near the town of Pease, is roughly 60 miles northwest of Minneapolis.

The girl, identified by the State Patrol as Alyssa Grimm, was seriously injured in the 10:19 p.m. incident. She was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where she died, the Pioneer Press reports.

The driver of the vehicle was a 29-year-old Milaca man, WJON reports. He and his 28-year-old wife, a passenger, were not injured, the Star Tribune reports.

Bicycle crashes in Minnesota

In 2013, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety released a 10-year study of traffic accidents in the state. In the most recent year available (2012), the report says there were 920 crashes involving bicycles. Seven people died as a result of a crash, but only 26 of those crashes and two of those deaths occurred in a city or townships with a population of less than 1,000.
