The Forum News Service reports a 97-year-old man was sitting in the passenger seat Sunday waiting for his son when a truck thief jumped in the driver's side and sped out of the Dilworth Wal-Mart parking lot.
“He tried to pull me out, and I fought him as best I could,” said Johnie Beckerleg, who normally needs a walker to get around.
The driver swerved, lost control then regained it. Beckerleg told police he figured the driver was drunk or "on something" and about to speed up.
"I kicked the door open and jumped,” Beckerleg said. “How I could do it, I have no idea.”
Now Joshua Stanley Fox, 32, of Moorhead, is in Clay County jail on charges of theft of a motor vehicle and criminal vehicular operation, both felonies. He also faces gross misdemeanor counts for driving while intoxicated.
Police said he had a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit.
They said Fox told them he had been drinking beer while watching football, but had to go to Wal-Mart to buy more beer.
The Associated Press reports Beckerleg is now recovering at home after going to the hospital for a dislocated shoulder.
