A hoverboard is being blamed for a house fire that killed 4 dogs

A hoverboard is being blamed for causing a house fire that injured a woman and killed four dogs.

A preliminary investigation shows the self-balancing scooter was charging when it started a fire at a home in Spicer last month, the Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office said Wednesday.

This comes on the heels of a Consumer Product Safety Commission recall of 500,000 hoverboards in early July due to a design flaw with the batteries. The CPSC has gotten 99 reports of issues with the lithium-ion battery packs, which have a history of exploding or starting on fire.

The problems have been so bad, places like Target and Amazon decided to step selling the hoverboards while the cause was being investigated, and many commercial airlines have issued outright ban of them on flights.

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office is urging people to double check their hoverboard to make sure it hasn't been recalled, and if it isn't on the list, to still make sure charging and operating instructions are closely followed to prevent any more incidents.

“We don’t want a fun time to turn deadly,” State Fire Marshal Bruce West said in a news release. “Reading instructions is simple. Taking a few minutes now can spare you potential heartbreak later.”

The CPSC said July 6 it has investigated more than 60 hoverboard fires in at least 20 states, which resulted in more than $2 million in property damage.
