Mahtomedi shooting victim was art teacher, bar owner; suspect in custody

Police have identified the victim of an early morning shooting in Mahtomedi as David Robert Frigaard, 46 (pictured above, center), who was an art teacher at Park High School in Cottage Grove.

He previously taught in Woodbury and also coached track and football, according to the Pioneer Press.

Frigaard, who lived in Roseville, also owned a bar in Willernie, Minnesota, according to FOX9.

Willernie is a city of approximately 500 people in Washington County, bordered on all sides by Mahtomedi; they are just north of St. Paul.

A suspect in custody and there is no threat to public safety, according to a statement from the Washington County Sheriff's office.

The Star Tribune reports that Washington County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of shots fired at 3.17 a.m. near Highway 244 and North 75th Street.

Police and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension were on the scene early Saturday, and blocked off a large area near to Wildwood Beach Road and Stillwater Road.

The suspect, a 19-year-old man, is being held in the Washington County Jail and awaiting formal charges.

Dozens gathered outside of the bar Saturday afternoon to honor Frigaard, said FOX9. A post on the bar's Facebook page said the following:

"The terrible events that transpired last night and took Dave from us will impact our small town forever. Dave Frigaard will be remembered for the great friend, father, husband, business owner, school teacher, Gopher football fan he was!"

People also posted condolences for Frigaard on the page. Here are a few:

"Park High School has lost a great teacher & a great man .... Dave will be missed by all .... Sending thoughts & prayers to his family."

"This is so incredibly sad. I will always remember what a fun art teacher and awesome track coach he was. I feel so fortunate to have had him for both in junior high. Praying for his family with their tragic loss of such a wonderful guy!"

"Words cannot express the sadness I feel for Dave's family at this time. My prayers are with you….He will be greatly missed at Park High School. He was adored by his students and colleagues and will always hold a place in our hearts. RIP."

"I am so devastated to hear this. This horrible tragedy will effect a lot of students, teachers, families and the community. Such a needless act of hate. He deserved so much better than this. He sacrificed so much for the students he taught and was very well respected. May peace find its way into your hearts."
