A massive Cuban art exhibit is coming to the Walker Art Center

It'll be the first time in more than 70 years that the U.S. has had a Cuban art exhibit this large and significant.

A new art exhibit is coming to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

According the the Walker, a Cuban art exhibit is scheduled to open next fall.

It's called "Adiós Utopia: Dreams and Deceptions in Cuban Art Since 1950," and it'll be the first time in more than 70 years that the U.S. has had a Cuban art display this large and significant.

"Adiós Utopia" looks at how the island's "revolutionary aspirations for social utopia" shaped 65 years of art. It focuses on artists who stayed there through Fidel Castro's rule.

There will be more than 100 works of art – including paintings, photography, videos and more.

And those works capture everything from "just before the overthrow of the Cuban republican government," to the collapse of the Soviet Union, and "Cuba’s ongoing isolation and economic distress under the Castro regime."

The massive exhibit is only scheduled to appear in two U.S. art galleries: the Walker Art Center in Minnesota, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas.

It'll be in Texas first, from March 5 to May 21, 2017.

Then it will open at the Walker Art Center Nov. 11, 2017 through March 18, 2018.

Restoring relations with Cuba

This exhibit comes as the U.S. has started taking big steps in restoring relations with Cuba.

Earlier this year, the U.S. government signed an agreement with Cuba to resume commercial flights between the two countries.

Then in August, a direct U.S. commercial flight landed in Cuba for the first time in more than 50 years.

Delta plans to start making trips there in December.
