A Minneapolis high school is raising money for a Prince-themed prom

Prom is always a special event. But some Twin Cities students want to make theirs even more memorable by celebrating like it's 1999 – Prince style.

Menlo Park Academy in Minneapolis describes itself as an "alternative" high school. The school says it provides extra support to students and helps those who don't do well in traditional classroom settings.

The school says 85 percent of its students come from low-income families, and most students are of color.

Since it is a small school (up to 75 students) and students tend to miss out on traditional high school experiences, Menlo Park Academy wants to plan a special prom for the teenagers. And in honor of the Purple One, this year's will be Prince-themed.

To keep the cost of attendance affordable, the school is having a fundraiser. Last year, it raised $3,000 and was able to cut prices from $30 each to $5.

And this year's special night is expected to cost $47 out-of-pocket for each student. That includes transportation, the costs of having the event on a riverboat, a DJ and dessert.

Once again, staff members say their goal is to raise $3,000. Any leftover funds will go towards yearbooks.

Menlo Park's prom will be May 14.
