Convicted murderer and former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell early Wednesday morning.

According to the Boston Globe, Hernandez, 27, committed suicide by hanging himself from a window with a bed sheet in his Massachusetts prison cell. He was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. Wednesday.

“Mr. Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population unit,” a Department of Correction statement said, according to the Globe. “Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window. Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.”

But Hernandez's attorney told TMZ that Hernandez showed no signs of being suicidal.

"There were no conversations or correspondence from Aaron to his family or legal team that would have indicated this scenario was a possibility. Aaron was looking forward to an opportunity for a second chance to prove his innocence. Those who love and care about him are heartbroken and determined to find the truth surrounding his untimely death."

The attorney is pushing for an investigation into Hernandez's death.

Late last week, Hernandez was acquitted of double murder charges in the 2012 shootings of two men in Boston. He was still serving a life sentence for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd.
