Additional federal review being considered in Philando Castile case

The Department of Justice says it's been monitoring the case since the start.

The Department of Justice is looking back over the Philando Castile case.

The District of Minnesota U.S. Attorney's Office put out a statement saying it is "assessing whether any additional federal review is justified" following Friday's verdict.

Former police officer Jeronimo Yanez was cleared of all criminal charges in last summer's fatal shooting of Castile.

The Department of Justice said it's been monitoring the case since the start, and during the lead-up to the prosecution sent an experienced attorney to help the Ramsey County Attorney's Office.

"We determined that this course of action was the strongest available avenue for a prosecution, given the higher level of intent required under the applicable federal criminal civil rights law," the statement said.

Gov. Mark Dayton and some of Minnesota's U.S. Congresspeople asked the Justice Department to investigate in the days following Castile's death.

And in December, the agency said it would review how the St. Anthony Police Department interacts with the community.
