Last August, KSTP-TV management announced that longtime local morning news anchor Vineeta Sawkar was being pulled from the anchor desk on May 1.
Now, with just a few days left at the station, Sawkar tells the Pioneer Press what the last few months have been like as she prepares for her departure.
"I'd like to call it a really interesting journey," Sawkar said. "I put the blinders on and do my thing and still enjoy the day with my co-workers, who I absolutely adore, and then just go back to doing my regular work with my family."
Sawkar lives in St. Paul with her husband Jason Branby, a product manager for Best Buy, and her two children, 12-year-old Jack and 10-year-old Leela.
After working at KSTP for nearly two decades, Sawkar said the announcement wasn't a total surprise.
"I think you kind of know leading up to that announcement the way someone may feel about you. It wasn't a total shock," she told the newspaper.
"You can handle these things a lot of different ways. I chose to, after almost 18 years with the station, to end it on a positive note. I refuse to be bitter, I refuse to be angry, I refuse to carry a chip on my shoulder. I worked way too hard and put in too much time there. I'd like to leave with my head up," Sawkar said.
As for the next chapter? Sawkar says she plans to take some time for herself and her family. She also said there's a few job opportunities in the works, but nothing to announce just yet.
