After drinking, snowmobile rider crashes into ice house and critically injures young boy

The driver had been drinking just before the crash.

A young boy was critically injured after a snowmobile smashed into an ice house on Friday evening.

The incident unfolded on Chisago Lake just before 8 p.m., when the snowmobile struck a father and son as they were assembling a portable ice house, according to the Chisago County Sheriff's Office.

The boy suffered head trauma and had shallow breathing.

He was airlifted to hospital, where it later emerged he'd suffered multiple fractures to his femur, and he remains in a critical condition.

The snowmobile driver was also injured in the crash, suffering a broken arm that required hospital treatment.

He told officers he had been drinking prior to the crash, but refused to provide a breath test once back on shore.

Police obtained a warrant to draw a blood sample from the rider. He is currently under arrest.
