After standoff, suspect in fatal Rochester shooting arrested in Faribault

Police arrested a man suspected of a fatal shooting in Rochester, after a standoff in Faribault.

According to the Faribault police Facebook page, detectives identified the city as a possible hideout for the suspect, who is suspected of shooting one man to death and wounding another as they played basketball in Rochester Monday afternoon.

The 19-year-old male suspect was spotted at a property on First Street Northwest at around 1.30 a.m., with officers, detectives, and a SWAT team forming a perimeter around the house.

Several other people arrived at the home at around 4 a.m., one of them a child, prompting police to call on the building's occupants to evacuate.

According to police:

The suspect however refused to cooperate and stayed in the building – along with another man who was believed to be hiding in a closet.

Despite several attempts to contact the suspect and the use of a public address system telling him to surrender, he failed to do so. A "chemical irritant" was then launched through the windows, prompting the men to exit, with both of them arrested.

"This potentially violent incident was unfortunate and certainly disruptive to the good residents of Faribault." City Police Chief Andy Bohlem said. "Thankfully, it was resolved with great patience and the suspect was taken into custody without any injuries to civilians, law enforcement, bystanders, and the subject wanted for questioning."

Police have been searching the property to look for any evidence related to the Rochester shooting.
