St. Paul police say the suspect was fleeing officers after they'd been called to an apartment on the 800 block of Blair Avenue just before midnight.

According to the report, the suspect was arguing with his girlfriend's teenage son and was wielding a machete, with which he tried to stab the teen.

Police were told the suspect had fled in a van, with the machete, and was driving at high speeds through nearby alleys.

One officer was almost struck by the van, which didn't have any lights on, before the garage crash happened shortly after.

He has been arrested on charges of criminal vehicular homicide.
