Afton man dies in St. Croix River boat crash, 2 injured

A boat crash on the St. Croix River late Wednesday night left one person dead and two others were injured, KSTP reports.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office told the television station that a boat ran into a rock face on the side of the river shortly before midnight just north of the Kinnickinnic State Park Beach in Wisconsin, killing 40-year-old David Joseph Riley of Afton.

Patrick Puhalla, 46, of Bayport and Daniel Michael Schultz, 55, of Hudson, Wis. were transported to Regions Hospital.

The Pioneer Press says Puhalla was in good condition Thursday afternoon. Schulz was treated and released.

Puhalla, the owner of the boat, was driving at the time of the accident.

Alcohol may be involved as some was found on the boat, but authorities say the cause of the crash is under investigation.
