AKC releases list of most popular dog breeds

The American Kennel Club on Wednesday released its list of the most popular dog breeds in America, and it mirrors one Minnesota list – although we seem to have an unusual preference for Chihuahuas and Shih Tzus.

The AKC list for 2012:

1. Labrador retriever (No. 1 for the 22nd year)
2. German Shepherd
3. Golden Retriever
4. Beagle
5. Bulldog
6. Yorkshire Terrier
7. Boxer
8. Poodle
9. Rottweiler
10. Dachshund

And here's a list from last year of the most popular breeds in Minnesota, compiled by vetstreet.com.

Minnesota:
1. Labrador Retriever

4. Golden Retriever
