Last night was the 44th annual American Music Awards, emanating from Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater. We knew before the broadcast that it was going to be a big night for hip-hop, as Drake had already broken Michael Jackson's 32-year-old record for most nominations in a single year (Jacko had 11 for Thriller, Drakeo had 13).
While the Canadian wound up taking home four awards, including the entirety of the hip-hop category for Favorite Artist/Album/Song and favorite soul/R&B song for his Rihanna collaboration "Work," (Rihanna also took home Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Album for Anti), hip-hop's other honors included Beyoncé winning tour of the year and Ty Dolla $ign's "Work From Home" with Fifth Harmony garnering Collaboration of the Year.
On top of that, we were treated to two Nicki Minaj performances. First, her award show-friendly collaboration with Ariana Grande "Side to Side," which managed to top their previous MTV Video Music Awards performance last August. Then, Minaj appeared as part of DJ Khaled's star-studded "Do You Mind" performance with Future, Rick Ross & August Alsina. Between last night's cameo and her take on "Black Beatles" from earlier this week, the Nicki we love is back in a big way!
