North America's largest window and door manufacturer is about to get bigger still.

The Pioneer Press reports that Andersen Windows, based in Bayport, plans an $18 million expansion project that will purchase new machinery and make improvements to its flagship Washington County manufacturing facility.

The Business Journal says the company will add at least 100 new jobs with an average wage of $19 per hour, including benefits. The 110-year old company employs 9,000 people at 15 sites across North America. Its Minnesota workforce is about 3,000.

“We had several location options to choose from and selected Minnesota because of the experienced workforce, our integrated supply chain model and the ability to leverage capacity at our flagship plant in Bayport,” Andersen CEO Jay Lund said in a statement.

The Star Tribune's story says Andersen will be awarded $625,000 from the Minnesota Job Creation Fund if the company meets it performance goals. The state fund provides up to $1 million to businesses after they meet certain criteria, including minimum requirements for job creation and private investment. To be eligible, businesses must create at least 10 full-time jobs and invest at least $500,000.

The 3 million square foot Bayport factory has run below capacity in recent years due to the housing slowdown and a reduced demand for doors and windows. During the recession, Andersen imposed several rounds of layoffs affecting hundreds of employees nationwide.
