Anglers in icy northern Wisconsin have opening dilemma: go south or fish streams

For fishing enthusiasts, it sometimes seems like opening day can't get here soon enough. But this year it's here a little too soon for northern Wisconsin anglers hoping to fish their local lakes.

Even the balmy temperatures this past weekend may not be enough to make the ice disappear from northwestern Wisconsin lakes in time for this coming Saturday's opener. A DNR biologist for Bayfield and Douglas Counties tells the Pioneer Press he's advising anglers to either head south to find open water or try their hand at fishing the region's trout streams.

Bayfield County is home this year to the ceremonies of the Governor's Fishing Opener, which is set for Lake Namekagon. State officials decided last week that there should be enough open water to proceed with the event in the Cable area.

Minnesota has an extra week before its May 11 walleye opener. But anxiety is running high among outfitters and resort owners on northern lakes. The Star Tribune reports nine of the state's ten leading walleye lakes look like they may still be ice clogged on the 11th.
