Animal Humane Society removes 95 dogs from 'unsanitary' home

The Animal Humane Society has removed 95 dogs from "extremely unsanitary conditions" following their seven-month investigation into a Minnesota couple.

The couple surrendered 53 dogs on Feb. 20, and on Wednesday the nonprofit removed 42 more dogs from the same owners, a news release says.

Most of the dogs are small breed mixes, including Shih Tzus, poodles and Maltese, the organization says. Some of the dogs have already found new homes, while others are receiving medical treatments, behavior assistance and being prepared for adoption.

The Animal Humane Society began looking into the couple in August 2015, following reports of a large number of dogs living in a home, garage and pole barn in Stacy, Minnesota. The organization went to check it out, but the owners wouldn't let them inside. However, they did agree to re-home most of the animals, the release says.

Before the nonprofit could obtain a search warrant on the property, the couple moved.

They were eventually located at a home in Maplewood in October. The couple was issued a letter of correction to reduce their pets to two dogs, and before the organization could legally obtain the pets, the couple moved again.

The investigation eventually led the nonprofit to Sandstone in February, where they were allowed in the home. The Animal Humane Society described the conditions as "dirty" and "extremely unsanitary," and the couple agreed to surrender the dogs.

The dogs are currently being held at the Animal Humane Society's Golden Valley location, a post on Facebook says. But they will be available for adoption at the organization's five shelter locations. Click here for information on how to adopt them.
