Another day of searching for elder missing on Gunflint Trail

Author:

Authorities in northeastern Minnesota Sunday will step up their efforts in another day of organized searching for an elderly man missing off the Gunflint Trail.

TheDuluth News Tribune reports that Paul Brandt, 82, who lives on the Gunflint Trail, was last seen on Thursday when he left his home to go blueberry picking. A State Patrol helicopter and search dogs were involved in the searches with local law enforcement on Friday and Saturday. Sunday's efforts include assistance from the Lake County and St. Louis County rescue squads and local volunteer fire departments. Bloodhounds from Sawyer County, Wis. have been requested.

The search is centered within a mile of where Brandt’s truck was found. The Northland News Center reports that Brandt's family is concerned that he may be hurt. He has had knee replacements in both legs.

Pete Abrahamson, Paul Brandt's friend of nearly 70 years who often joined him to pick berries, was involved in the Saturday search.

"It's a rough area," he told the station. "A lot of ravines, brush, burned trees fallen down trees."

Brandt is described as 6'1", 190 pounds, with gray hair and blue eyes and wears glasses.
