A 36-year-old Apple Valley man who prosecutors believe killed his wife and her unborn child has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, the Pioneer Press reports.

Investigators say that Margorie Ann Holland, 37, who was 15 weeks pregnant, was found on Thursday morning at the bottom of a stairway at her apartment, with injuries consistent with strangulation, according to the criminal complaint, the Pioneer Press reports.

The woman died about an hour later at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, the newspaper reports.

Police say that the woman's husband, Roger Earl Holland, 36, was the first to contact them. Holland was arrested Friday, the Pioneer Press reported.

The criminal complaint said that Holland initially claimed his wife had had a heart attack. He also initially claimed the couple hadn't been having problems. But police found deleted text messages that suggest otherwise, the Pioneer Press reported. Texts indicated Margorie Holland was unhappy in her marriage and planned to leave, the Pioneer Press reported.
