A crash and shooting Wednesday afternoon in Fridley has Highway 65 (Central Avenue) shut down in both directions.

Fridley Police say a crash with injuries around 4:20 p.m. escalated into a fight and then a shooting, with one victim suffering a life-threatening gunshot wound to the face.

Witnesses told police that one of the people involved in the four-car crash tried attacked other drivers with a knife. That's when a bystander armed with a handgun shot the man with the knife multiple times.

The man who shot is cooperating with police.

The closure impacts northbound Highway 65, according to Fridley Police Captain Brian George. The City of Fridley says there are major delays

The closure is expected to at least for at least a few hours, Capt. George added.
