Police took an armed man into custody in the parking lot of an elementary school Tuesday night after a 12-mile, high-speed chase across the north metro, during which he intentionally rammed into two police cars, reports say.

The man, who hasn't been identified, was wanted in Coon Rapids because his wife, who lives in the city with his children, called police and warned them he was armed with a gun and suicidal, the Pioneer Press reports.

At about 8 p.m., police caught up to him in Coon Rapids, but he took off, intentionally hitting two Coon Rapids police cars, the Star Tribune reports. He then sped through Blaine reaching speeds of 80 mph before being forced into a parking lot at Lino Lakes Elementary School and holding a gun to his head, the Pioneer Press notes.

After a one-hour standoff with police, during which the man had a long, tense phone conversation with his wife, he got out of his truck and surrendered peacefully, according to reports.

The man wasn't injured and was taken to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids to be evaluated, reports say.

His name is being withheld pending charges by the county attorney's office, the Associated Press reports.
