Armed robbery, group assault reported in separate incidents near Twin Cities campuses

A student was robbed and a man assaulted by four suspects in separate incidents near Twin Cities university campuses this week.

A man was injured near the University of Minnesota campus Tuesday evening when he was attacked by four other men, according to a crime alert from campus police.

The incident occurred just before midnight at the corner of Cedar Ave. S and 3rd St. S. and started when a group of four men began talking to the victim on the opposite side of the street, before crossing and assaulting him.

The victim required some medical attention. He is not affiliated with the university, the release says.

St. Thomas robbery

About 24 hours later, a female University of St. Thomas student was the victim of an armed robbery at Grand Avenue and Finn Street in St. Paul.

According to a crime alert, the student was walking westbound on Grand Avenue when she was confronted by a suspect walking northbound on Finn Street.

He approached her and brandished a "small handgun," demanding money before taking her phone and purse. He fled south on Finn Street.

The suspect is described as a black male, 6 feet tall, with black hair in twists. He was clean shaven and wearing a black or gray sweatshirt.

Anyone with information about the assault near the U of M should call Minneapolis police on 612-692-8477. Those with information about the St. Paul armed robbery should call 651-291-1111.
