A train crash in West Africa has left many people dead and even more injured.

At least 70 people were killed and 600 injured after a crowded passenger train was derailed in Cameroon on Friday, President Paul Biya wrote on Facebook Saturday morning.

There were 1,300 people on board – the train was carrying more than twice as many passengers as usual because recent heavy rains have caused landslides and blocked major roads, BBC said.

It was traveling from the capital Yaounde to the economic hub Douala when it came off the tracks near Eseka, The Guardian reported.

The train line is operated by Camrail, and they're responsible for maintaining the tracks and bridges, MPR notes.

Officials say the cause of the accident is not yet clear.

"I have asked the government to provide a total support for the survivors, while the investigations will be made to determine the cause of the derailment," Biya's Facebook post said.
