Attorney General wants Humana investigated

Attorney General Lori Swanson is asking federal regulators to look into whether Humana has been bilking seniors and health care providers who participate in the company's Medicare Advantage plan, according to the Pioneer Press.

Humana is a for-profit insurance company that sells Medicare Advantage plans to seniors who prefer a private plan to regular Medicare.

In a letter to federal officials, Swanson and 25 co-signers accuse Humana of denying claims involving Medicare-covered services, failing to update its provider network and overcharging for insurance and co-payments.

The Star Tribune says the investigation is being requested just as the open enrollment period to choose health plans is beginning.

The Louisville Ky.-based company has not responded to media requests for comment.

Minnesota has the highest number of enrollees in Medicare Advantage in the country on a per capita basis, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation
