Authorities investigate after Ely man dies in his jail cell

The 50-year-old was found unresponsive just after lunchtime Tuesday.

Authorities are investigating after a man was found dead in his cell at a jail in St. Louis County, Minnesota.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reports that 50-year-old Jack Price, of Ely, was found collapsed in his cell at the Virginia Jail by a corrections deputy making his rounds at 1:47 p.m. Tuesday.

Paramedics tried to revive the man, but their efforts were unsuccessful and he was declared dead at the scene.

The sheriff's office says no foul play is suspected, but it is investigating the incident along with the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office.

In December, a 48-year-old man died 10 hours after being booked into Hennepin County Jail. It later emerged that he had swallowed cocaine.

Deaths in police custody

In a report released last month, the Bureau of Justice Statistics said there were 486 arrest-related deaths in the United States from June 2015 to August 2015, including three in Minnesota.

Of all the deaths in that three-month period, 64 percent were ruled a homicide (the legal term for someone whose death was caused by someone else); 18 percent were suicide; and 11 percent were accidental.

The agency estimates there were 1,900 arrest-related deaths in all of 2015. For more detailed information on arrest-related deaths in the United States, click here.
