'Avid cyclist' killed on bike ride when SUV veers onto shoulder

A man described as a well-known, "avid" cyclist has been killed after his bicycle was clipped as he rode on the shoulder of a county road in central Minnesota.

John Seiler, 51, of Sartell, died after he was hit by a car that drifted onto the shoulder of County Highway 2 in St. Wendel Township – northwest of St. Cloud – on Tuesday, KARE 11 reports.

Seiler was found unresponsive in a ditch by authorities called to the scene, with attempts to revive him proving unsuccessful.

Stearns County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Bruce Bechtold told the Star Tribune Seiler was a "pretty well known, avid cyclist in town," adding he was wearing a helmet and riding on a "very wide" shoulder when he was hit.

“This poor guy was doing nothing wrong and got clipped," he said. "It could’ve happened to any one of us."

According to WCCO, Seiler was hit by an SUV driven by 73-year-old from Pasadena, California.

The incident is being investigated by the Minnesota State Patrol, which is in the process of reconstructing the collision.
