More Minnesotans seek gun permits

The FBI says they conducted 56,000 background checks in December as a result of more Minnesotans applying for gun permits, an increase of 64 percent from the same time in 2011, KSTP reports.

Analysts say the growing demand for guns may be attributed to a spike in concerns that tighter gun control regulations could go into effect following the deadly mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

"Yeah, I see a lot of panic buying," David Meacham of Coon Rapids said. Meacham is selling ammunition and reloading supplies at a gun and knife show being held at the Brooklyn Park Armory this weekend.

KSTP reports background checks in Minnesota and 32 other states are not required for people wanting to purchase firearms at gun shows.

The Connecticut school shooting rekindled a long-time debate over gun control. Gov. Dayton, a long-time defender of the right to own firearms, said he would consider new gun-control measures in the upcoming legislative session.
