Bartender charged after man drowns in Maple Grove pond

A bartender at a Maple Grove bar is facing a gross misdemeanor after allegedly serving her underage friend who was later pulled from an icy pond nearby.

On April 26, 20-year-old Andrew Pitts of Brooklyn Park reportedly walked onto receding ice over the pond behind Great River Energy on Elm Creek Boulevard and fell through. Pitts was underwater for about an hour before divers found him. He died at Maple Grove Hospital.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office tells KSTP that 21-year-old Rebekah Thomas served alcohol to Pitts, a friend of hers, at the Claddagh Irish Pub without asking for identification.

Witnesses reported Pitts appeared to be intoxicated before walking onto the ice, the sheriff's office said.

Thomas of Maple Grove is charged with selling liquor to someone under the age of 21.

Pitts would have turned 21 on May 12.
