Bemidji elementary school teacher faces sex abuse charges

A Bemidji physical education teacher and hockey coach was arraigned Wednesday on sexual abuse charges.

DL-Online reports 58-year-old John Wangberg of Cass Lake faces two felony counts of second-degree sexual conduct and a gross misdemeanor charge of non-consensual sexual conduct for the alleged abuse of three former students in 2010 and 2011.

According to the complaint, the victims were between the ages of 5 and 7 years old when the abuse took place at Central Elementary.

The first victim came forward in March 2011 and told police Wangberg had touched her inappropriately. Wangberg resigned from his 30-year teaching career just two days prior.

A search of Wangberg's work computer found images of young girls in bikinis, the newspaper reports.

It wasn't until December of last year when two more students came to police. The second victim also reported inappropriate touching and the third told police Wangberg took photos of her private areas.

Wangberg was taken into custody Wednesday. A judge set bail at $5,000.

The mother of one of the victims tells Valley News Live that the charges bring a sigh of relief.
