Twin Cities teacher fired for 'inappropriate communications' with students

A senior high engineering instructor at Benilde-St. Margaret's School in St. Louis Park was fired effective Tuesday after interacting with students outside of class in ways considered to be "inappropriate."

Jon Hickman is also a photographer whose work includes senior portraits, the Star Tribune reports. Although the school is releasing very few details about what specifically led up to the firing, Hickman's photography seems to be related.

"Mr. Hickman has had inappropriate communications with BSM students," Benilde President Dr. Bob Tift wrote in a letter to parents, according to KSTP's report. "Additionally, we understand that Mr. Hickman has had interactions with BSM students through non-teaching activities. Any such activities including senior photographs or artistic modeling are not connected with or endorsed by BSM."

The newspaper points out Hickman's photography page on Facebook includes two young girls in their bikinis, along with another girl shown in suggestive poses.

Students described Hickman to KARE 11 as a good teacher and very well-liked.

Tift said once the school had become aware of the "situation" recently, they acted immediately.
