Big I-94 closure promises headache for crosstown travelers this weekend

Getting around the Twin Cities might not be too pleasant this weekend thanks to a road construction project.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says Interstate 94 in the Hamline Midway area of St. Paul will close in both directions between Highway 280 and I-35 East at 10 p.m. on Friday night.

The highway won't reopen until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

According to WCCO, the closure allows construction workers to begin major repairs on the Snelling Avenue Bridge, which will be closed until mid-August.

The station says it may make things difficult for those traveling between Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Considering the wide range of big events in store this weekend, drivers might want to start planning alternate routes now.

The Minnesota Twins have three home games, rock singer-songwriter Billy Joel is playing the nearby Target Center on Saturday night, and Northeast Minneapolis hosts art crawl Art-a-Whirl from Friday to Sunday.
