Techne hires ex-3M exec as its new leader

Charles Kummeth will join Techne Corp. -- a Minneapolis-based maker of of biotechnology products -- as its chief executive officer next month, the Associated Press reports.

Kummeth, 52, replaces Greg Melsen, who has served as interim CEO since November when former CEO Thomas Oland announced his retirement.

The Business Journal notes Oland disagreed with the board’s decision to look outside the company for his successor.

"To fill the CEO position with someone who has no detailed knowledge of our culture, management or operations, and with whom you have not had a working relationship, will put at risk all that we and our employees have built over the past 30 years," he wrote in a letter to the board last fall.

Kummeth most recently served as president of mass spectrometry and chromatography at Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., according to a news release. He was also the vice president of 3M's medical division from 2006 to 2008.

Melsen will continue to serve as the company's vice president of finance and CFO.
