Blaine bank teller foils cross-country ID theft ring, five charged

Identity thieves with alleged victims in five different states were stopped by the suspicions of a bank teller in Blaine.

Five people have been served with charges relating to identify theft in Anoka County District Court this week over an alleged cross-country crime spree, leaving 16 victims in its wake.

FOX 9 reports that Beth Porter, 32, of Tallahassee, Florida, and Kortney Suber, 36, of no permanent address, left with three others from Florida in a van on Friday.

As they drove across the country, FOX 9 notes, they are alleged to have broken into several cars to steal purses, wallets, checkbooks, social security cards and other identification, as well as cashing stolen checks and using stolen IDs at banks.

The Pioneer Press reports that Porter and Suber were discovered at the Bank of the West in Blaine at 1.30 p.m. Monday, after a teller became suspicious after one of the women tried to cash an out-of-state check for $1,800.

They were found in a black Chrysler minivan in the bank's drive-through, and upon searching the vehicle officers found a wig and identity documents belonging to five people.

They then searched a hotel room in Bloomington, where they found and arrested Masued Headen, 21, of an unknown address, Ashley Wimberly, 28, of Miami, and Willie Morris, 26, of Pompano Beach, Florida.

During a search of the room on March 30, they found another wig and items belonging to another 11 victims, from Iowa Minnesota, Nebraska and North Dakota.

"The Blaine Police Department is pleased that we received immediate information from Bank of the West," Blaine Police Chief Chris Olson told ABC Newspapers. "A quick and decisive response by Blaine patrol officers and detectives, along with our partners from the Bloomington Police Department, helped recover evidence and take suspects into custody."

Each of them was charged with one felony count of identity theft on Thursday by the Anoka County Attorney’s Office.
