Hennepin County prosecutors have charged a Blaine man with criminal vehicular homicide following a weekend car crash in Bloomington.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Tuesday that Nicholas Michael Lowers, 27, has been charged with one count of criminal vehicular homicide and operating a motor vehicle in a grossly negligent manner.
He also has been charged with one count of theft – taking a motor vehicle without owner consent and fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.
According to the criminal complaint, Bloomington police say they saw a silver Saturn with a missing front license plate run a red light at the intersection of American Blvd and East 12th Ave S. Authorities say the vehicle went into a parking lot, then ran over a berm and a sidewalk as it exited back onto the street.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but authorities say Lowers sped off at speeds up to 90 mph – and eventually collided with another car traveling south bound at American and 34th Ave.
A 24-year-old female passenger in the Saturn was killed in the crash.
Lowers is expected to make his first court appearance in Hennepin County Court Wednesday afternoon.
