Bloomingdale's launches clearance sale Sunday; mall looks to future

Bloomingdale's clearance sale starts Sunday at the Mall of America as one of the mall's original anchor tenants prepares to close. The site is just one of nine stores that Macy's, Inc. is closing around the country. And the Mall of America, meanwhile, says it's close to signing deals with four "fashion-forward retailers" to take over the spot.

The deals start Sunday: Bloomingdale's is launching a clearance sale this weekend following news that one of the mall's original anchor tenants will close, according to the AP. The sale will run for 10 weeks.

The store is just one of five Macy's and four Bloomingdale's across the country that Macy's, Inc. is closing after disappointing performance.

But shoppers might have something to look forward to, at least according to the Mall of America, which tells Kare 11 it's already in talks with four "fashion-forward retailers" to take over the space. "Three of them are brand new to the market," said a mall spokesman.

At least one local retail expert says the closure shouldn't have a tremendous affect on the mall. Dave Brennan tells the Business Journal upscale department stores generally don't do too well in this market. He says the mall's core "is still very strong."
