BMTN Preview: Fabulous Five high school football games of the week
BMTN and KFAN’s Joe Nelson is ready for another week of high school football, and it doesn’t get any better than the top two teams in Class 6A squaring off. Can Edina pull off back-to-back wins over perennial power houses Wayzata and Eden Prairie?
Check out the game preview, along with four other great matchups on the prep fields tonight.
5. Mahtomedi @ Hill-Murray – 7:00 p.m.
Big Classic Suburban game. Hill-Murray nearlyl upset St. Thomas Academy a few weeks ago, so they’ve proven they can play with upper-echelon teams. Mahtomedi, meanwhile has won two in a row after losing a close game to South St. Paul. The Pioneers are a very well coached team, and with the leadership from senior QB Zach LaValle, I can see them winning a tightly contested game.
4. Eastview @ Prior Lake – 7:00 p.m.
Eastview is coming off an incredible come-from-behind win over Apple Valley, so momentum is on their side. Prior Lake has been tough to figure out. They were highly regarded before the season began, but a week 2 blowout loss against Lakeville South had a lot of us high school football snobs questioning them. We were wrong. Prior Lake has responded with four consecutive wins, including a big upset against a very talented Lakeville North team.
3. Holy Angels @ Farmington – 7:00 p.m.
Both teams are coming off of blowout losses. Holy Angels gave up 51 points to Chaska and Farmington was whipped 27-3 by Chanhassen. However, if the QRF system is accurate (BCS-like system that ranks teams in every class, usually deciding the seeds for section playoffs), then Farmington will easily win. The Tigers are ranked fourth in 5A in the latest QRF standings.
2. ChisagoLakes @ SpringLakePark – 7:00 p.m.
In sports, it is often said that nothing is more dangerous than a team that believes in itself. We know No. 3 Spring Lake Park’s players believe, but I’m certain that the kids at Chisago Lakes believe as well. Chisago has put together a great story this season with an impressive 5-1 record. However, they haven’t faced a team like the Panthers yet. Both teams bring a lot back from last year, and Spring Lake Park whipped the Wildcats 34-7. I think it will be closer tonight, but I still like the Panthers to win.
1. Edina @ Eden Prairie – 7:00 p.m.
Can the Hornets pull off the incredible task of beating Wayzata and Eden Prairie in back-to-back weeks? Honestly, I’m not sure any team has EVER knocked off those two juggernauts in consecutive weeks. It might happen tonight. I’m not going to pick it that way for the simple fact that Eden Prairie is punishing opponents on the ground. If the Hornets do win, I’m guessing the ultra-talented wide receiver Marley Allison has another huge game. He caught the overtime winner two weeks ago against Minnetonka and the go-ahead 97-yard touchdown against Wayzata last week. Oh … and they’re the top two ranked teams in the state. Not a game, eh?
