The body found in the St. Croix River near Stillwater Saturday has been identified as 24-year-old Abbey Russell, the Stillwater woman who had been missing for more than a week.
The Ramsey County medical examiner positively identified her Sunday, according to a statement from the Washington County Sheriff's Department.
Russell's body was found just north of downtown Stillwater Saturday afternoon by a person who was fishing on the river, the Star Tribune notes. Officials from the Stillwater Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department then recovered her from the water.
Searchers had been looking for Russell on the ground, by air and in the river since she went missing from her home about a week ago.
Police say Russell left her house on North Broadway Street shortly after midnight last Saturday morning. She was on foot, and left behind her keys, cellphone and identification.
Russell, who worked as a server at Pub 112 in downtown Stillwater, moved to the river town a few weeks ago from Pensacola, Fla. She grew up in Fall Creek, Wis., near Eau Claire.
