The Fond Du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is investigating why a 3-year-old was left alone for at least three hours on a bus on tribal land near Cloquet Monday morning in temperatures hovering at 0 degrees, the Pine Journal reports.

Doctors told Brooklynn Wait that her son might have died after another hour of exposure, the newspaper reported. She said the boy had been strapped into the seat behind the driver.

A passerby heard him screaming at 11 a.m., about four hours after he was due at his Head Start program.

“He said, ‘I was crying and nobody helped me,’” she said.
